Islam ordained zakat to achieve spiritual, inner, and social aims.

Islam ordained zakat to achieve spiritual, inner, and social aims. Allah Almighty says: "Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify and sanctify them, and pray for them; indeed your prayer is a reassurance for them, and Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing." The first effect of zakat upon Muslims is purification: purifying their wealth of any impurities that may have crept into it, purifying their bodies of whatever may have occurred while gathering that wealth, and sanctifying the soul and spirit by freeing them from servitude to money and from miserliness with it, accustoming them instead to generosity, and offering it to Allah Almighty with a contented heart. All of this is accompanied by the supplication of the Prophet, peace be upon him, for the one whose soul is at ease and whose spirit is purified, who fulfils the right of Allah and the right of His servants with a willing heart. Through this supplication comes serenity of soul, an opening of the heart, and a sense of the sweetness of worship and the honour of servitude to Allah Almighty.
